Our class focused on an exercise to collaboratively design a full neighborhood using Baldwin Park as our “canvas” and incorporating a range of housing densities, places to shop, work, learn, and plan, and connecting with our neighbors in a meaningful way. Below is a link to the PowerPoint presentation overview of parks and park systems. We will review the presentation at the next class.

This week’s class covered some basics about the “kit of parts” that urban designers use to guide the assembly of a city – buildings, streets, and public spaces.

Our discussion about great streets was lively and interesting, with a comparison between Alafaya Trail, Park Avenue, Aloma Avenue, New Broad Street, and Church Street.

2009 Fall PAD 5337 Syllabus

A new survey from IBM called “The Commuter’s Challenge” confirms that the $4 – $5 range for gas really is the breaking point for a large number of Americans. Asked at what gas price they would seriously consider other options for commuting (besides motoring solo) a stunning 70 percent of people pegged their magic number at $5 or less. If it were a Family Feud question, $5 itself would be “number one answer,” in fact, representing 21 percent of respondents.
